WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Promotion.  Pay raise.  Increased responsibility.  Upward mobility.  Career progression.  Goals.

These are words we hear every day, and whether military or civilian, can define our career and job satisfaction.  But in the labyrinth of the DoD bureaucracy, the key to achieving these goals can be a daunting find.  That’s where the Air Force Materiel Command Career Development Event can help with your career focus and preparation for that next step up.

This is the second year for the event, which was established to fill a gap in mentorship and career progression.  “Our senior leaders here felt there was a need for the workforce to have an opportunity to hear from senior leaders.  They are the heads of these career fields, and they can provide some valuable insight on career development,” said Patricia Wortham, the AFMC Logistics Headquarters Training Focal Point for the event.

The two-part event is April 11 at AFIT’s Kenney Hall, and is sponsored by AFMC’s Executive Director’s Office and the AFMC/A4 Logistics, Civil Engineering and Force Protection Directorate.  Part one is a senior leader panel that features members of the Senior Executive Service from a wide variety of career fields.  It is open to all military and civilian personnel, and runs from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.

“You can expect engaging and thought-provoking dialogue, networking opportunities and thoughtful insight from our very own SES members,” said Wortham.  “It’s important for the workforce to not only be proactive in their career development but also get in front of folks that can help guide them towards their goals - mentorship is vital.”

Members of the SES panel are:

  • Mr. Jeffery Shelton – Deputy Administrative Assistant to the Secretary of the Air Force, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

  • Mr. Jorge Gonzalez - Director of Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Engineering and Technical Management/Services Directorate, WPAFB

  • Mr. Don Kendrick - Senior Financial Advisor, Headquarters Air Force Material Command, WPAFB

  • Mr. John W. “Bill” Snodgrass - Director, Manpower, Personnel and Services, Headquarters Air Force Material Command

  • Ms. Heidi Bullock - Director of Contracting, Headquarters Air Force Material Command, WPAFB

  • Mr. Edwin Oshiba – Director of Civil Engineers, Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics, Engineering and Force Protection, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.

  • Mr. Jeffrey Allen – Executive Director, Air Force Sustainment Center, Air Force Material  Command, Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma

Part two runs from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. and is focused on writing Executive Core Qualifications, a key document for those aspiring to become a member of the SES.  This audience is limited to NH-04, GS-15 and military O-6 and above.  Mr. Shelton and Mr. Oshiba will lead this session.  Registration is not required for either session.

All of the sessions will be recorded and made available at a later date for those who are unable to attend in person.

For those who already understand how to write an ECQ, an additional opportunity exists on April 12.  Four SES members will be available to go over a pre-submitted ECQ.  This is limited to the first ten individuals that provide a two-page maximum Word document to Ms. Wortham.  The deadline for submission is March 28, and once accepted, you will be provided a calendar appointment for a one-on-one session with either Mr. Shelton, Mr. Oshiba, Ms. Bullock, or Mr. Allen.

For more information about the event, or to submit your ECQ for the April 12 sessions, email Ms. Wortham at patricia.wortham@us.af.mil.
