The deadline to volunteer for the Air Force Marathon is approaching quickly, and organizers say there are still spots open.

"We're still looking for volunteers for Thursday at the expo," said Jeanette Monaghan, volunteer coordinator. "We also need volunteers for Friday during the day at the expo."
The Sports & Fitness Expo is the two-day event at Wright State University's Nutter Center on Sept. 19 and 20 where runners pick up their race packets and browse the vendor booths. Volunteers can help with runner bib pick-up, shirt distribution, security, merchandise sales and more.

Volunteer registration opened May 1, and the 2,300 volunteers that Monaghan will recruit are essential support for this event.

She is also looking for musicians and performers of all varieties and acts to provide course entertainment. The course entertainers are great motivators for the runners on the course.

"Every single volunteer is essential to support our 15,000 runners," said Monaghan. "And every job is important to our event. We could not have this event without our volunteers."
Monaghan said the runners always show appreciation for all the volunteers donating their time at the water stations, the expo and other places. She says the marathon even has volunteers who donate their time during spring and fall.

All of the positions are listed on the marathon's website, www.usafmarathon.com, and volunteers can register online there.

All volunteers receive a free Air Force Marathon T-shirt.

The 2013 Air Force Marathon is Sept. 21 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. The 5K is Sept. 20 at Wright State University's Nutter Center.
