Base emergency responders wrap up barrel incident

Base officials are wrapping up an incident from early Tuesday when a 55-gallon drum barrel was hit by a semi-truck and ended up just outside the base fence along State Route 444 in Fairborn.

Base Security Forces initially received a call from the Ohio Department of Transportation due to the location of the barrel, which was in the vicinity of Gate 9A, and its lack of appropriate identifying placards to indicate contents.  As a precaution, base residents in the Green Acres and Pine Estates housing areas were briefly evacuated, but since have been permitted to return to their homes.

Base Firefighters, HAZMAT teams and 88th Security Forces Squadron members responded, working in close coordination with Fairborn Police Department and Ohio State Patrol officials. Base officials headed clean up of the area and are working with Department of Transportation and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency officials to identify the contents of the barrel. No leaks were found at the site.

The barrel was placed in an over pack to ensure protection from leaked substances during removal from the site. The container was turned over to the Dayton Regional HAZMAT team for disposal.
