Ohioans take top spots in U.S. Air Force Marathon 5K Race Published Sept. 15, 2007 By Rachel Castle 88th Air Base Wing Public Affairs WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Two F-16 Fighting Falcons screamed overhead as an estimated close to 1,000 runners and wheelchair racers positioned themselves at the starting line at Wright State University in Friday's 5K Race, the first official event of the U.S. Air Force Marathon. Ohioans took the top spots in each overall division. Overall wheelchair winner was Nick Cunningham of Yellow Springs with a time of 17:20. Male overall winner was Sam Windom from Sylvania who finished in 18:34. Overall female winner was Elizabeth Parker of Kettering. She turned in a time of 21:11. Top three placings in the wheelchair division include: 1st place: Nick Cunningham of Yellow Springs, Ohio: 17:20 2nd place: Shawn Volegesang of Lima, Ohio: 26:49 3rd place: Jeremy Finton of Vandalia, Ohio: 47.01 Top three division winners in the male & female categories include: Male Overall: Sam Windom of Sylvania, Ohio: 18:34 Male Military Winner: Todd Scarbrough of Sumpter, S.C.: 19:12 Male Wright State University: Tom Svobodny of Dayton, Ohio: 21:00 Female Overall: Elizabeth Parker of Kettering, Ohio: 21:11 Female Military Winner: Miriam Coleman of Cambridge, Mass.: 22:06 Female Wright State University: Carrie Smith of Dayton, Ohio: 23:10 The wheelchair, marathon, half-marathon and relay races will begin today with an opening ceremony at 7 a.m. All events will start and end at the National Museum of the United Stated Air Force. This year, the marathon course will wind through downtown Fairborn, as well as throughout the base.
