The American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery, Inc., (ASLMS) the world's largest scientific organization dedicated to promoting research, education and high standards of clinical care in the field of medical laser applications, has notified an AFOSR program manager that he has been elevated to the status of Fellow.

Dr. Howard Schlossberg, a staff member of the Directorate of Physics and Electronics, joined AFOSR in 1978. He is recognized as a world leader in developing laser technologies for military and civilian applications and is excited to be selected as an ASLMS Fellow.

"I am deeply honored by this recognition. It probably results from my involvement in the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medical Free Electron Laser Program, a pioneering program in merging optical physics, engineering, and medicine to develop beneficial new diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, especially for combat casualty care and other military needs. The program's great success is a result of the extraordinarily talented and devoted people we have funded within it," he said.

Dr. Schlossberg's exceptional performance in leading AFOSR's Laser and Optical Physics research programs has generated numerous scientific advances to strengthen national defense. He has made significant contributions to the advancement of leading-edge optical technologies throughout AFOSR and Air Force laboratory research programs. He is also a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Optical Society of America. He has published 25 scientific papers and holds 24 patents. He is also a member of numerous engineering committees and planning boards.

ASLMS hosts the largest conference on laser therapy and biology in the United States. More than 300 scientific papers are presented annually, and symposia in each specialty are included in the scientific sessions to acquaint attendees with the latest developments and clinical laser use.
