A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 711th Human Performance Wing new complex will be held on Wednesday, June 1, at 10 a.m. in front of Building 840, Area B, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

The complex is being named in honor of Major General Harry G. Armstrong, a pioneer in the field of aerospace medicine and the second Surgeon General of the U.S. Air Force.

The U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, the Human Effectiveness Directorate, the Human Performance Integration Directorate, and the Naval Medical Research Unit - Dayton will occupy the 680,000-square-foot facility.

The $239 million complex is a joint project of Butt Construction Co., Dayton, and Archer Western Contractors, Chicago.

The 711 HPW and the complex were established in response to the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure directives. To implement BRAC, the Air Force activated the 711th HPW in March of 2008. The activation established the first human-centric warfare wing to consolidate research, consultation and education under one organization. The Wing is composed of three mission units: the Human Effectiveness Directorate, the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, and the Human Performance Integration Directorate.

In conjunction with the Naval Medical Research Unit - Dayton, and surrounding universities and medical institutions, the 711th HPW functions as a Joint Department of Defense Center of Excellence for human performance operating in a university model of education and training, research and development, and clinical evaluation and consultation.
