A recent study found unapproved and potentially dangerous drugs in 746 dietary supplements. The Food and Drug Administration has a Tainted Products Marketed as Dietary Supplements resource, but within the Department of Defense, military service members and their families, healthcare providers and leaders have access to a tool to help determine if a supplement might contain a dangerous ingredient.

The Operation Supplement Safety High-Risk Supplement List is available on opss.org and as Apple and Android apps. This list is updated monthly and currently contains nearly 500 products. Even if your supplement does not appear on either list, it still might not be safe to consume, especially if it is a supplement marketed for bodybuilding, weight loss or sexual enhancement, it’s best to talk with a healthcare provider before you buy.

OPSS offers the “Ask the Expert” feature which enables users to ask a question and receive a tailored, science-based response. OPSS also provides a way to “Rate Your Supplement” by answering questions on an interactive scorecard to see whether a supplement might be OK to use.

So, before you decide to take a dietary supplement product, check the OPSS High-Risk Supplement List, “Rate Your Supplement” and consult your healthcare provider.

OPSS is a program under the Consortium for Health and Military Performance, a DOD Center of Excellence at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
