The 711th Human Performance Wing Human Systems Integration Directorate (711 HPW/HP) headquartered at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, provides Human Systems Integration (HSI) capability to the United States Air Force. Major areas of emphasis include a human-centered approach to capability requirements definition and development planning, embedded HSI practitioners in MAJCOM requirements offices (A5), embedded practitioner support and reach-back support to System Program Offices, and expanded support to AF Medical Service (AFMS).

Col. Philip Preen is the Commander, Human Systems Integration Directorate (HP), 711th Human Performance Wing, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The Directorate provides Human Systems Integration (HSI) expertise for the Line of the Air Force (LAF) and the Air Force Medical System (AFMS).

HSI facilitates the systematic integration of nine human-centered domains (Manpower, Personnel, Training, Human Factors Engineering, Survivability, Environment, Safety, Occupational Health, and Habitability) to optimize total system performance and decrease cost, and informs the life cycle decision making process with a human-centered focus.

CLE 062: Human Systems Integration: Designed to provide a basic understanding of Human Systems Integration (HSI) as part of the DoD's Total Systems Engineering approach for optimizing system performance and minimizing total ownership costs.

Defense Acquisition Guidebook: Supports acquisition policy documents DoDD 5000.01 and DoDI 5000.02 by providing discretionary best practices for the acquisition workforce.

Organizational Structure

IMPLEMENTATION DIVISION (HPI) – The division advances human-centered design in the acquisition of weapons systems to maximize total system performance and reduce life cycle costs; facilitates human systems integration process implementation during weapons systems requirements development and acquisition across the Air Force enterprise areas of aeronautics, Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR), munitions, and space/missile; and consults with high performance teams, program managers, systems engineers, and integrated product teams to execute human systems integration.

ANALYSIS DIVISION (HPA) – The Analysis Division focuses primarily on medical and line HSI prior to establishment of a program office. HPA Medical Branch (HPAM) objective is to apply HSI to AFMS capabilities and systems in acquisitions and health care delivery. HPA Materiel Branch (HPAA) objective is to provide consultative support to early acquisition efforts/programs prior to Milestone B. This includes capability requirements planning, development planning and product support, Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (JCIDS) document reviews, and input to AF policy documents.

What is HSI?

Human Systems Integration (HSI) is a process to ensure systems are designed and developed that effectively and affordably integrate with human capabilities and limitations.

The HSI process considers :

	human factors engineering manpower personnel		training survivability habitability
	environmental, safety, & occupational health (ESOH)

These domains must be taken into account throughout system design, development, fielding, and sustainment.
