COLONEL DAVID J. WINEBRENER

Colonel David J. Winebrener is the Deputy Director/AFRL Detachment 14 Commander for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, where he guides the management of the entire basic research investment for the Air Force. AFOSR consists of a staff of 200 scientists, engineers and administrators in Arlington, Virginia, and foreign technology offices in London, Tokyo and Santiago, Chile. Each year, AFOSR selects, sponsors and manages revolutionary basic research that impacts the future Air Force. AFOSR interacts with leading scientists and engineers throughout the world to identify breakthrough opportunities; actively manages a $510 million investment portfolio encompassing the best of these opportunities; and transitions the resulting discoveries to other components of the Air Force Research Laboratory, to defense industries and to other federal agencies. The office's annual investment in basic research is distributed among over 200 leading academic institutions worldwide, 100 industry-based contracts, and more than 250 internal AFRL research efforts.

Prior to assuming his current position, he served as the Chief of Aircraft Integration in the Advanced Programs Division of the Armament Directorate at Eglin AFB, Florida.  There he led a 12-member joint team that integrates advanced weapons onto USAF & Navy aircraft. He has also served as the Deputy Director of the Range Group at Eglin AFB, where he helped develop, operate, & upgrade the Eglin Test & Training Complex and as Commander of the National RCS Test Facility on White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.
