Researchers at the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, have developed a novel, lightweight artificial hair sensor that mimics those used by natural fliers—like bats and crickets—by using carbon nanotube forests grown inside glass fiber capillaries. The RAM Air Inlet is located beneath the wing of an aircraft where it takes in outside air to feed cooling systems during flight. A next generation F-35 coatings application booth at Hill Air Force Base is set to become initially operational by October 2017. The state-of-the-art coatings booth project, led by the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Advanced Power Technology Office, is expected to save more than $330,000 annually in energy through the employment of advanced sensors, control logic and sophisticated software analysis tools to monitor and improve performance over the lifetime of the complex.
