Part of AFRL's Forward Operating Base of the Future demonstration is one complete expeditionary microgrid system at Basic Expeditionary Airmen Skills Training (BEAST), Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. Monocrystalline silicon solar panels are placed on top of each tent for energy production. A trailer (center) holds the hardware, software and lithium ion batteries that form the smart grid and provide energy backup should the grid fail. A next generation F-35 coatings application booth at Hill Air Force Base is set to become initially operational by October 2017. The state-of-the-art coatings booth project, led by the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Advanced Power Technology Office, is expected to save more than $330,000 annually in energy through the employment of advanced sensors, control logic and sophisticated software analysis tools to monitor and improve performance over the lifetime of the complex.
