Permanent change of station moves call for careful planning

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- When the school year comes to an end, the peak moving season begins. The military family knows all too well, with orders in hand, of a permanent change of station (PCS) move is here.

Planning is the key to unlocking a successful move according to the Wright-Patterson Personal Property Processing Office (PPPO), previously named the Transportation Management Office (TMO).

With high-volume moves scheduled during the summer months, start now and register on the Defense Personal Property System (DPS) website at www.move.mil, said Anna "Suzie" Puckett, 88th Air Base Wing PPPO Lead. The internet-based booking system is managed by the Joint Personal Property Shipping Office-North East for household goods moves.

After the Airman receives their orders and accomplishes the necessary counseling online, he or she must provide the supporting documents to the PPPO.  Booking moves require three weeks in advance and involves primary and alternate dates, said Puckett.

"The website offers a lot of good information on tips to make the move go smoothly. After completing the initial moving requirements online, the Airman works directly with the carrier to arrange a packing, pick-up and delivery date," said Puckett.

Not all personal property shipments are in this new system; for first or last time moves contact the PPPO.

When contacting the PPPO or completing the application online, the Airman will need to provide the following:

- A complete set of orders and DD forms 1299 and 1797 (hardcopy to PPPO).
- What type of shipment is preferred and the estimated weight.
- An idea of when move is wanted. Avoid lease termination or home closings dates during household goods packing, pick-up, and delivery dates. Must be present (or a designated person) during 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on these dates.
- The date of arrival at new duty station and when to accept the shipment.
- A list of large or unusual items.

After arriving at the new location, Airmen should contact the local PPPO even though he or she may not know the delivery address or date for personal property.

The Airman or a designated person must be home to accept delivery. Know in advance where each piece of furniture needs to be placed and check-off each item on the inventory.

"If the Airman discovers any loss or damage upon delivery, he or she can submit a claim directly online or a quick claim under $500 may be settled directly with the carrier." said Puckett.

Changing duty stations is often challenging and stressful, especially for the new first move; however, there are numerous sources and offices dedicated to help make it painless as possible.
