Unity Choir inspires WPAFB community through song

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- The sweet sound of music is in the air once again, resounding from the Air Force Security Assistance Cooperation Directorate's Unity Choir.

A mainstay in AFSAC, this choir continues to support various organizations all over the base through inspirational songs, ranging from gospel to secular.

The AFSAC Unity Choir became official in 1999, but not from lack of trying numerous times beforehand.  Although singers were accessible, an organized formal group was never formed.  That year, Schneata Shyne-Turner was approached to lead.  She accepted the challenge and the choir was created.

This diverse choir is comprised of volunteers from many Wright-Patterson organizations.  Although the nucleus of the group originates from AFSAC, many people come from other organizations from around the base.  Retired employees have also returned to help make the choir performances special.

"Our choir is an entity of its own and performs for all kinds of events on the base," said Shyne-Turner.

AFSAC is not always available to accommodate rehearsals, especially due to the high volume of singing.

"To accommodate the varied schedules of the members from different organizations, I try to have rehearsals during the lunch hour twice a week for upcoming performances," said Shyne-Turner, AFSAC choir director.

Shyne-Turner stated the choir truly appreciated the hospitality of the AF Band of Flight opening their doors by lending a rehearsal room during the month of December in preparation for the AFSAC Holiday party.

Years ago, the unity choir used the AFSAC name because it originated within the organization, although it was never meant to belong or perform solely for AFSAC.  As the choir continued to grow, they began to perform for other organizations and functions on the base.

Over the years, the AFSAC Unity Choir has participated in events such as holiday caroling, Martin Luther King Jr. luncheon, Black History month, Juneteenth celebrations, promotions, retirements, farewells and other community celebrations.

Being charged to work with several creative directors through its existence, the choir has made an impact on base leaders.

"Over the years, this choir has grown to gain the respect of senior management and they look forward to us participating in various programs," said Shyne-Turner.

The AFSAC Unity Choir will perform selections this month during the Black History Month luncheon, Thursday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. at the Wright-Patt Club and Banquet Center.
