Senior Airman Joshua O’Sullivan, a respiratory therapist from the 88th Medical Group, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, has been named to the 10th volume of the Air Force’s Portraits in Courage, an annual program that highlights individual Airmen and teams for their honor, valor, devotion and selfless sacrifice in the face of extreme danger to themselves and others. O’Sullivan was attached to a Critical Care Air Transportation Team at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, on Nov. 12, 2016, when an explosion near his quarters critically injured military personnel. Senior Airman Joshua O’Sullivan, a respiratory therapist from the 88th Medical Group, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, has been named to the 10th volume of the Air Force’s Portraits in Courage, an annual program that highlights individual Airmen and teams for their honor, valor, devotion and selfless sacrifice in the face of extreme danger to themselves and others. O’Sullivan was attached to a Critical Care Air Transportation Team at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, on Nov. 12, 2016, when an explosion near his quarters critically injured military personnel. A trained medic, O’Sullivan raced to the scene to render aid. For what he accomplished that day as he treated the wounded and mustered support from other responders to get the victims to the hospital, he has been recognized by the Air Force. The completed dental appliance (right) fabricated by the 88th Dental Squadron Dental Lab incorporates the accelerometer holder (center) into one custom-made and easy-to-use unit for the ejection seat research performed by the 711th Human Performance Wing’s Applied Neuroscience Branch. The unitized device effectively replaces the carrier and holder (left) previously attached to a commercially-produced sports mouth guard which often failed during critical testing. Using materials formulated for dental retainers and hard night guards, the 88th Dental Squadron Dental Lab successfully fabricated dental appliances designed to hold an accelerometer used in ejection seat research by the 711th Human Performance Wing’s Applied Neuroscience Branch. The successful collaboration between the two organizations, now helps provide consistent and accurate data used to determine how best to mitigate the stresses and impact of an actual ejection event.
