AFMC mom, daughter run half marathon
WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFMCNS) -- Having just completed the 11th annual U.S. Air Force Marathon's half-marathon race on Saturday, Barbara A. Westgate, Air Force Materiel Command executive director, places a finisher's medal around her daughter, Beth Smith. In turn, Ms. Smith awarded her mother with her own medal. Mrs. Westgate dedicated herself to a 42-week program to train specifically for the race. In the process, she lost 44 pounds, and realized her rededication to wellness. (Al Bright/U.S. Air Force)

Gen. Bruce Carlson, Air Force Materiel Command commander, presents retired Staff Sgt. Frank Bartlett the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in World War II. Bartlett was a crew member aboard the B-17 "Yardbird" when it was shot down May 29, 1943 over St. Nazaire, France. He was taken prisoner by German forces and spent 16 months in a prison camp in Krems, Austria.
