Caesar
Cecelia Mitchell, anthropologist and research scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory, explains how a 3D anthropometric full-body surface scan works while a test subject model poses in the standing scan position in the scanner. As seen on the model, researchers place 72 white stickers at key anatomical sites on the body. These site stickers allow researchers to take additional measurements from scanned data, using the stickers as reference points. Army Spc. Chad Tobin (left) and Staff Sgt. Stephan Simmins participated in an On-The-Move training exercise in June at Fort Dix, N. J. The exercise featured Air Force technology applied to support the Army’s Future Force Warrior concept, including a goggle-mounted display, a hand-held mouse that activates push-to-talk PC voice command software, a backpack PC and power system, and rifle-mounted laser range finder. Mission Accomplished
Astronaut (and Air Force Reservist) Michael E. Fossum works in Space Shuttle Discovery's cargo bay during a mission this summer. The astronaut, who is an individual mobilization augmentee colonel assigned to the F-16 Program Office at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, performed three spacewalks during Discovery's 13-day, 5-million-mile journey. Colonel Fossum and his crewmates were able to accomplish all of the main objectives of their mission: flying an improved external tank, testing on-orbit shuttle repair procedures and preparing the International Space Station for future assembly.
