7/1/2013 - WRIGHT-PATTERSON Air Force Base, Ohio -- The Aerospace Medical Association (AsMA) recently awarded Col. David Rhodes of the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine with the Eric Liljencrantz Award.

The award was established in memory of Commander Eric Liljencrantz, MC, USN, whose career in aviation medicine was cut short by his death in an airplane accident in 1942.

Each year, award winners are honored for their contributions to basic research into the problems of acceleration, altitude, or weightlessness, or for excellence as an educator in aerospace medicine. Rhodes was award the 2012 Eric Liljencrantz Award as a distinguished member of USAFSAM's Aerospace Graduate Medicine Branch where he serves as the Program Director of the Residence in Aerospace Medicine (RAM) Program.

Rhodes was honored for his innovative efforts towards the training of military flight surgeons and updating of curricula. In his time as Program Director, Rhodes has graduated four classes of RAMs through residency and served during an unprecedented series of changes to the RAM program, including its move from Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. In addition to his duties as Program Director, Rhodes is an AsMA Fellow, a member of the American Society of Aerospace Medicine Specialists, and is on the Editorial Board for Aviation, Space, and Environmental Medicine.
