National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program

The NDSEG Fellowship Program is a Department of Defense (DoD) fellowship program sponsored by AFOSR, Army Research Office (ARO), Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP). The DoD is committed to increasing the number and quality of our Nation's scientists and engineers. The actual number of awards varies from year to year, depending upon the available funding. The NDSEG Fellows do not incur any military or other service obligations. NDSEG Fellowships are highly competitive and will be awarded for full-time study and research.

An awardee must be enrolled in a graduate program by Fall 2011; the graduate program must lead towards a Ph.D. Preference will be given to applicants in one, or closely related to one, of the following specialties:

  • Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering;
  • Biosciences;
  • Chemical Engineering;
  • Chemistry;
  • Civil Engineering;
  • Cognitive, Neural and Behavioral Sciences;
  • Computer and Computational Sciences;
  • Electrical Engineering;
  • Geosciences;
  • Materials Science and Engineering;
  • Mathematics;
  • Mechanical Engineering;
  • Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering;
  • Oceanography; and
  • Physics
Eligibility
The NDSEG Fellowship Program is open only to applicants who are citizens or nationals of the United States. Proof of citizenship will be required upon formal offer. NDSEG Fellowships are intended for students at or near the beginning of their graduate studies in science or engineering. Consideration is made for applicants changing fields, but those with a Ph.D. in science or engineering or any medical degree are not eligible for the Fellowship. All Fellows must begin their Fellowship tenure in the fall of the award year. Fellows must be eligible to accept both the tuition benefit and the full stipend amount. A Fellow may not accept simultaneous remuneration from another major fellowship.

Tenure
The tenure of an NDSEG Fellowship is 36 months cumulatively starting in the fall of the award year. Alternate tenure may be granted under exceptional circumstances with the prior approval of DoD. Exceptional circumstances include: The Fellow is invited to do research at a DoD laboratory or Test Center for one or more summer periods, or The Fellow's graduate institution does not offer an appropriate program during the summer months. The availability of funds for the second and third years of each three-year award is contingent upon certification to ASEE by the Fellow's institution that the Fellow has made satisfactory academic progress toward an advanced degree in one of the specified science or engineering fields.

Tuition, Stipends and Allowances
The DoD will pay the Fellow's full tuition and required fees, stipend, and up to $1,000 in health insurance coverage.

Tuition and all required fees (not to include room and board) are provided. There are no dependency or travel allowances. A stipend is provided in the amount of $30,500 for the first year, $31,000 the second, and $31,500 the third. Stipends are prorated monthly based on a 12-month academic year. If the Fellow is not enrolled in an institutionally approved academic study and/or research during the summer months, financial support will not be provided. Any stipend payment received for a period in which you were not actually engaged in fellowship activities must be refunded to the DoD. Persons with disabilities will be considered for additional allowances to offset special educational expenses. The NDSEG Fellowship will pay for the minimum individual health insurance coverage offered through the institution, up to a total value of $1,000. Any excess insurance costs will be the responsibility of the Fellow and can be paid using the stipend.

All applicants are required to submit their applications online. Detailed instructions for electronic submission and for mailing supporting documents can be found at the ASEE NDSEG Fellowship Program Web Site.
