MH-53 Pave Low Armor Plating Panels Container

The Air Force Packaging Technology and Engineering Facility (AFPTEF) was asked by the program office at Robins AFB to develop a container for armor plating panels that line the floor of the MH-53 helicopter. The contractor supplied wood crate didn't meet the user's requirements for outside storage, handling, and ease of use. In addition, a new aluminum long life container will reduce life cycle packaging costs. Numerous designs were discussed with the user comparing the positives and negatives of the design features along with what the manufacturing cost would be for that specific design. The chosen design met the users' requirements and was the most economical to fabricate. The new aluminum container has four-way fork pocket entry and tie-down/lift rings for mechanical lift as well as multiple handles on the cover for manual cover removal if necessary. The container is water tight and can be stored outside. It also organizes the panels and protects them from the environment and excessive shock and vibration. AFPTEF fabricated a prototype of the design to perform qualification and fit and function testing. The container passed all tests.
In order to meet first site activation for the newly procured panels the program office asked AFPTEF to fabricate twelve identical containers for field use. The containers were fabricated and sent to the field for delivery and storage of the panel systems.
