MC-130H Combat Talon II Nose Radome Container

The Logistics Program Office at Robins AF Base contacted AFPTEF with a problem they were having with the current wood container for the Combat Talon II Nose Radome. AFPTEF had designed an aluminum cradle/pallet system for the radome in 1995 when the system was first fielded. We also design an exterior aluminum container to house the radome in its cradle system during transportation and storage. However, due to cost factors at the time the program office, then at Wright-Patterson, decided to have us design a less expensive wood version of the external container. Unlike most wood boxes, this one lasted in the field, with minimal repairs, for almost 10 years. Finally it was time to replace the wood boxes. They were becoming damaged beyond repair and were no longer cost effective and did not provide protection for the radomes. So rather than spend money having new short life wood boxes fabricated, the program office decided to go with the aluminum long life design. AFPTEF re-designed the original aluminum design to work with the fielded cradle systems, fabricated the prototype, and
performed qualification and fit and function testing. After successful completion of the testing, a contract was awarded for the fabrication of 28 aluminum containers. AFPTEF also developed a TO for field crews to perform the cradle exchange process from the current wood crates to the new aluminum container once they were delivered.
