This Directorate sponsored program seeks faculty members and accompanying graduate students in technical fields to join the Directorate's research staffs at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Ohio through each summer. This program is administered by the Directorate which provides oversight for the selection and appointment of applicants. The Directorate facilities and research support are provided by the host sponsors where the Summer Faculty awardees will be in full time residence for the duration of the summer award. Selected researchers are employed by contractor who manages the program for the Air Force. The research topics are the same used by the American Society of Engineering Education and are posted on their web site at: http://sffp.asee.org/program_search_form/. Select the Air Force Research Facility titled "AFRL/RZ WRIGHT PATTERSON AF BASE, OHIO." It is acceptable after you find a topic of interest to contact the sponsor to discuss your proposal in advance of submittal.

The following broad guidelines will help determine if you are qualified to apply during the announcement period that typically runs from December 15 through March 1:
- Faculty and graduate students must be free to work continuously for an eight-to twelve-week period during the summer. (Appointments may be made outside this period, such as faculty may work only 4 weeks if they are advising a graduate student who is working 8-12 weeks.)
- If you are a faculty member, you must fulfill three criteria in order to be eligible for the Summer Research Fellowship Program:
- You must be a U.S. citizen;
- You must currently be a full-time faculty member of an accredited U.S. college, university, or technical institution; and
- You must have a minimum of two years teaching and research experience.
- If you are a graduate student, you must fulfill the following three criteria:
- You must be a U.S. citizen;
- You must hold either a bachelor's or a master's degree in a relevant field; and
- You must currently be enrolled, on a full-time basis, in an accredited graduate program in a field related to the Directorate's technical disciplines
