As the Director of Contracting and Deputy Director for Air Force Materiel Command's Enterprise Sourcing Group, Colonel Mitchell is responsible for an organization with a predicted end strength of 429 people and a total contract portfolio of more than $25.3 billion. He also directs enterprise-wide installation strategic sourcing for Air Force bases in the continental US. ESG executes existing and future contracting workload managed by its four aligning organizations, Defense Technical Information Center, Air Force Medical Service, Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment and Air Force Civil Engineering Service Agency. The ESG supports the Air Force mission with six active Commodity Councils, covering $4.7 billion in strategic sourcing spend.

Colonel Robert E. Mitchell was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1983 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at the University of Texas. He began his career as an administrative officer at Tinker Air Force Base serving in the 552nd Airborne Warning and Control Wing. After seven years and three bases serving as an executive officer and squadron section commander, he cross-trained into the contracting career field where he served in Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) and Air Education and Training Command (AETC) in positions at the base and headquarters level. He has served as a Deputy Group Commander for three different groups, as the Deputy Director for Procurement for the Defense Information Systems Agency, as Chief, Resource Management Division, Directorate of Contracting, HQ AFMC and is currently the Deputy Director, Enterprise Sourcing Group, headquartered at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio.
