Scientists use metamaterial to compress light

Air Force Office of Scientific Research-funded scientists at the University of California at Berkeley fabricated a new type of metamaterial that bends light backwards, in a way that does not exist in nature. Such metamaterial compresses light into tighter spaces and improves optical communication, computation and detection, and camouflage capabilities. (U.S. Air Force Graphic)

Computer models help research improved hearing protection

Researchers funded by the Air Force, Army, and Navy are investigating ways to improve communication links for people wearing headphones, helmets and other protective equipment in noisy environments. They have created finite element code, based on earlier software that has helped them build a model of the human head. The model, similar to this graphical representation, shows detailing of the cochlea region and its interface with the skull and air pathways. (U.S. Air Force graphic)
