First-Ever Airfoil Profile of In-Flight Bird May Inspire Future MAV Concepts
Three-dimensional mapping derived from stereo-vision images taken of the bird’s wing produced the first-ever measurement of a live bird’s wing airfoil profile while in unrestrained flight. These results will aid efforts to understand the morphing that occurs during flight maneuvers—which, in turn, will benefit development of tomorrow’s MAVs.

Unique “fingerprint” of an artificial atom’s energy-level structure.
Amplitude spectroscopy generates a unique “fingerprint” of an artificial atom’s energy-level structure. This fingerprint comprises quantum interference patterns that form an energy landscape in the space of flux and microwave field amplitude. The peaks and valleys of this landscape take the shape of diamonds and, like a fingerprint, provide a unique snapshot of the atom’s energy-level structure (image courtesy of S.O. Valenzuela and W.D. Oliver).
