WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – November is National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and Airmen at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base have taken the lead in prevention efforts with the Airmen Against Drunk Driving group, located at the USO building in the Kittyhawk Area.

AADD members volunteer at the main gates on Thursday and Friday, handing out business cards with the AADD phone number (937) 257-2233-for ride calls.

Volunteer’s answer calls at the USO building on Friday and Saturday nights from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m. for Airmen needing a ride home. The ride home is free, and usage is not recorded.

The first sergeants talk to their units to sponsor a weekend and ask for volunteers. Four Airmen from each unit volunteer to answer phone calls over a specific weekend, according to Tech Sgt. David Magrum, AADD President.

AADD donates money for snacks, and the Airmen have access to games and videos while they staff the phones, said Magrum.

The shift leads, known as dispatchers, handle sign in logs and drivers work in teams of two. Volunteers give advance notice two to three weeks in advance of working for holidays, Wing Day, and family days.

Airmen looking for a consistent long-term volunteer commitment can join the AADD community.

New AADD committee members are committed for six months, according to Magrum. Volunteers may be eligible for a military service ribbon after attaining 500 hours of service.
